The Gorsedh committee did a great job in compacting the open air ceremony at Hayle Academy into the hall due to the weather. Most of the ceremony was conducted in the Cornish language, with translations in the programme and by the speakers.

We were welcomed into the bardic circle by Grand Bard, Mab Stenak Veur, Pol Hodge, giving us our bardic names Donsyer an Werin (Folk Dancer), and Menstrel Manow (Minstrel from Man).

Here we are with fellow dancers and bards, Jerry Sethir, Long Arrow and Jaqi Heard, Myrgh Kemmynieth, Daughter of a Community.

And here we are with Kathy Wallis, Gwithyades Hengovyow, Keeper of Traditions, who keeps the annual folk customs alive in East Rillaton and beyond, often with our joyful participation.

We thank all the folk that have and will join our workshops and events where we continue to promote Cornish identity and culture through folk music and dance.

Meur ras oll! I danced out for the first time since lockdown #1 2020 at a very special socially distanced ‘Crying the Neck’ ceremony in Rillaton, Cornwall for Goldheys (Harvest Home) back in September. It was fabulous to see familiar faces after such a long lock-in, and to sing a few songs together and enjoy a sweet selection of tunes on such a glorious day.

'Crying the Neck' is an ancient tradition that celebrates the cutting of the last sheaf of the harvest. The Harvest King, the local farmer, goes to the field with the gleaners and taking a stone from the ground sharpens the scythe. As he does this a jug of ale is passed around and everyone there takes a sip to ensure they will never be thirsty in the coming year. This continues while the farmer cuts the last sheaf of the harvest with the scythe which is then tied and garlanded with a red ribbon.

<img alt="Farmer Chris Daniel holds the 'neck' aloft crying "I 'ave 'un! I 'ave un! I 'ave un!'

the gleaners cry back, 'What 'ave ee? What 'ave ee? What ave ee?'

and the farmer responds, 'The Neck! The Neck! The Neck!'.

By this time the ale has done the round and the last drops are poured in to the ground. One more song and the gleaners go and glean their own corn to take home. The Neck is taken back to the farm where it is traditionally ploughed back into the earth to ensure a continued good harvest.

This custom was around in 1599 as the plasterwork on the ceiling of East Rillaton Cottage is of a Neck of Corn garlanded for harvest. Traditionally everyone gathers back at the cottage, bringing something for a Bring and Share Harvest Supper, celebrating the harvest safely home with songs, stories and music in to the early hours of the morning...

This year, Matt was still baling hay in the field we were in. Dancers for the annual Liskeard Furry Dance

Background

Liskeard Lions have been running Liskeard Furry Dance (also known as the 'Floral Dance') during Carnival Week for over 40 years, and it was a long-standing tradition in Liskeard before that. Records dating back to 1856 by John Allen show that there was a procession to music with 'a dance performed at the frolic green' in Liskeard.

Participant numbers have been falling significantly in recent years, and unless they can be increased, there is a real chance the dance will no longer happen, breaking the long-standing tradition of processional dancing in Liskeard.

One of the best festivals on the planet, with excellent music and dancing, a zero waste policy - enamel cups and plates, metal cutlery, a recycling disco, washing up stations, and the infamous long-drop compostable loos!

Koswik (Cornish for 'forest') played for dancing on a damp Sunday afternoon with a highly appreciative set of dancers, introducing Cornish music and dance to the festival for the first time.

All sessions include LIVE music.

Liskeard's Liskerrett Centre has some of the finest views of the neighbouring countryside, Launceston Town Hall has one of the biggest wooden dance floors in the Duchy, and the Falcon Hotel in Bude has great afternoon teas.

DANCERS

Pick up the steps for a handful of traditional and contemporary Cornish set, step and social folk dances with a friendly bunch of people. Suitable for all levels, ages and abilities.

Bring scoots/clogs/taps/hard shoes for step dancing if you have them . . . we'll have a few spares with us in a range of sizes each week, thanks to our friends at FolkActive.

MUSICIANS

A great opportunity for squeeze box, string and wind musicians to play for dancing.

Here's the Cornish Dance Tunes set list for you - we'll pick our handful of dances from that list, playing through plenty of times with dynamics to give the dancers an extra 'lift'.
Back in 2012, I had the joy of presenting a session on Cornish dance back at the 6th Folk Educators Group meeting in Halsway Manor, and joined the 20th meeting last year in Essex, as the #cromer2cornwall project began taking shape*.

Over 35 delegates and presenters joined us from across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and our friends from the EFDSS, Kerry Fletcher (co-chair and Dance Development Officer), Rachel Elliott (Education Director) and Sarah Jones (Programme Manager – National Youth Folk Ensemble).
Dancer-musician-teacher, Kate Tidball took five Cornish dances from the fortnightly #BudeFolk #cornishdance workshops straight into the classroom, along with snippets of Cornish language from fellow dancers, and Cornish language teachers, Jaqi and Jerry.

“Can we count in Cornish?” they asked as they were about to dance Mr Martin’s Reel.
You betcha!
We’re hoping to teach the children a few scoot dances over the summer, trying out the scoots, clogs and taps on loan from our friends at Folk Active, and perhaps an end-of-year celebration for the whole school!
Dydh da! Fatla genes?

Good day! How are you?

We're thrilled to be running a series of Cornish Guise Dance workshops every Saturday in Liskeard Public Rooms from 14th October to 2nd December, supporting #NadelikLyskerrys, a Cornish #LiskeardChristmas and #LiskeardLightsUp.
We're aiming to bring together a set of set and step dances in time for the festivities over the first weekend of December and beyond, and maybe learn a bit of Cornish on the way! Splann!!

Taught from scratch each week, and suitable for any level; scoots/taps/clogs/hard shoes recommended to 'make one hell of a clatter'. No partner required.

By the end of this series, your incredible 'muscle memory' (we all have one, usually hidden away somewhere!) will have mastered the steps, shapes and forms of the dances, and you should feel comfortable with at least one dance to share at one or more events over the #NadelikLyskerrys weekend.

LIVE music from the Scoot Lyskerrys Collective . . .

Magic hat 🎩 collection on a PAYF (pay as you feel) basis for a spot of fun-fit exercise.

Eight joint 'playing for dancing' #cornishmusic and 'dancing for fun' #cornishdance sessions, with growing confidence and lots of laughter from all participants on the way 😂.

HUGE THANKS 🙌 to Mike and Chris Jurkiewicz, Bude Folk Club and Bude Folk Festival for having the faith, the Falcon Hotel for the space and copious amounts of tea, coffee and apple juice, and to all of you for joining us when you could!

We were so sorry not to have made the final session, or the festival this year . . . extra special thanks to Kate and John for stepping in for us!

And an extra round of applause 🙌 to Kate for taking the dances straight from the workshops to her year 5 students from the very first session, AND hosting an AWESOME short-notice workshop for the Bude Beavers with her son!!
Methinks Bude has become quite self-sufficient. Sticks, steps, and maybe even barrels in the follow-up series 💃🎻!

A few of us had the chance to have a go at a new card game in Cornish with Cornish language teacher, Jerry after one of the sessions, and learn a few words associated with #cornishdance!

I'd love to master calling dances in Cornish by the end of 2017! Wonder if there's anywhere in Liskeard to learn . . . ?

Here's a few of the pics taken by the marvellous Bob Griggs at one of the sessions, and the great Six Hand Reel set too.

Liskeard's Michael Loam was the original inventor of the #ManEngine.

We were anticipating around 3-5,000 people . . . 13,000 turned up on the day to be part of the #ManEngine ceremony . . . a day when you wish you'd have gotten your cross-town event comms running, especially when the dear fellow wasn't able to stand upright on the given hour!!

I joined the first planning session with #ManEngine central, as the safety routes were being planned, and to support the Town Council, local traders and heritage organisations in creating an engaging pre-ceremony programme of events. It was the end of May.

This was an extraordinarily special project for Bodmin Town, with a call out for help to revive The Children's Dance, when 1,000 or so children used to learn the dance at school, with schools entering with their banners, and receiving trophies.

Maybe all that target reporting work means there isn't time to spend on such frivolous activities as helping children learn how to work together, how to dance, and how important heritage is to them.

Fortunately, a good number of young people persuaded their parents to let them join in, so big up the parents!

Rehearsals began in January at the Sheer Dance Academy with the brilliant support of Sam and Sally Deakin and Carly Butler-Hoare, and as the weather warmed up, we took the rehearsals outside to Mount Folly, having had the necessary things in place from Bodmin Town Council.

Each rehearsal included The Children's Dance, and a selection of dances from the Cornish dance repertoire, like "Mr Martin's Reel", "Old Hand-in-Hand" and a Serpent dance. Thanks to our trusty musicians for playing so brilliantly each time. Plenty of laughter from both children and adults alike!
Justine Stephens, one of the driving forces behind the revival of The Children's Dance, introduced me to the Bodmin variation of "North Cornwall Furry" as we demonstrated the dance for the wonderful dancers. Subtly different to all the other variations of this dance I've ever come across, with just four steps forward (rather than the usual 8), right hand star, left hand star, followed by four steps forward, right hand star, left hand star.

A perfect 'fit' to the music!
Stepping out like gazelles . . . "one, two, three, hop". Top tip to conserve energy and give the littler ones a chance of keeping up: keep the steps quite low.
Justine and one of the wonderful parents recollect The Children's Dance from the time their own children took part in Bodmin Heritage Day . . . "...all the parents used to help out with the costumes...bonnets, shawls & skirts for the girls..."..."...it was Pauline who used to come into each school from Bodmin Heritage to teach the parents the dance, so they could teach their children..."

Here's to persuading as many parents and guardians as possible in the Bodmin area to let their wonderful children experience the thrill of participating in Bodmin Heritage Day - The Children's Dance on Saturday 2nd July 2016!

Huge thanks to Sam & Sally Deakin for generously providing the rehearsal space and persuading his students to participate, to Carlton for the music, the amazing young people, and the effervescent energy of the volunteers.

Feel free to share any old pictures of the dance you might have, and your own stories either here, or on the Bodmin Heritage Day - The Children's Dance page - it'd be fantastic to hear from you.
