Background
Liskeard Lions have been running Liskeard Furry Dance (also known as the 'Floral Dance') during Carnival Week for over 40 years, and it was a long-standing tradition in Liskeard before that. Records dating back to 1856 by John Allen show that there was a procession to music with 'a dance performed at the frolic green' in Liskeard.
Participant numbers have been falling significantly in recent years, and unless they can be increased, there is a real chance the dance will no longer happen, breaking the long-standing tradition of processional dancing in Liskeard.
Workshops
To help people participate, we're running three workshops, providing the opportunity for adults and young people to practice the dance before taking it out on the streets. It's easy and fun!
"I remember dancing this at school" |
Practice dates with LIVE music are:
- Wednesday 12th June - 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Liskeard Public Hall - open to all
- Friday 15th June - 5:30pm to 6:30pm in the Liskerrett Centre for Wham Bam Theatre and the Lyskerrys Youth Club
- Tuesday 18th June - 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Liskeard Public Hall - open to all
Bring your friends and family members, work colleagues, running mates, footballers, cricketers, gig-rowers, swimmers, athletes, artists, musicians, comedians etc. etc. to make up sets of four people. The more the merrier, and the greater chance of survival for Liskeard Furry Dance.
Liskeard Furry Dance
Liskeard Furry Dance takes place on Wednesday 19th June, with registration in the Cattle Market Car Park at 5:30pm, including crowning of the new Carnival Royalty 2019, and dance off at 6:30pm with Liskeard Silver Band.
The dance will take the traditional route from the Cattle Market Car Park up to The Parade, down Pound Street, past Eventide to The Eliot House Hotel for a refreshment break (phew!), carrying on down Church Street, up Pike Street (cripes, that's steep!) back to The Parade, and finishing at the Cattle Market Car Park.
Fancy dress, with prizes!
